The Princess and the Wizard | Kids Yoga Class Plan

This class plan is part of the Children’s Book Bundle – five wonderful children’s books adapted into yoga story scripts.

In honour of World Book day, I want to share with you a fabulous kids yoga class plan which is great for kids aged 3 years+. It’s based on the brilliant Julia Donaldson story, The Princess and the Wizard, adapted and brought to life with yoga postures. I can assure you the kids will LOVE it!

The yoga instructions are highlighted in bold or have a posture picture linked in so you can click to see the move I’m suggesting. I’ve offered some text instruction in places which should be simple enough to follow. Hope you have fun with it and let me know how you get on! Namaste.

Let’s start sitting with our legs crossed and opening and closing our magic spell fingers whilst making magic sound effects.

We mix up some magic potion, sit with our legs crossed, hands on our knees and stirring it up by circling our body from the hips. Ask everyone what they’d like to put in, we stir one way, then the other.

Today is Princess Eliza’s birthday party. She is celebrating turning 5. Lot’s of friends are there. There’s the dog. woof woofing and wagging his tail. There’s the cat slinking around on all fours going ‘meow’. There’s a little mouse too who’s having great fun eating all the cheese on sticks! As well as lots of human friends too and they are all playing musical bumps! (Play some rounds of musical bumps having a good dance and when the children land on their ‘bumps’ they sit cross legged with hands at the heart and say Namaste!)

Time for the birthday cake! All five candles are lit and she is just about to blow them out, when there is a thundering knock at the door. Sitting up, bend your knees and stomp your feet.
Princess Eliza opens the door. Hold opposite elbows and raise the arms up above your head going cccrrrreeeaakkkk!

Outside the door with a very grumpy face is the wicked wizard. “I’m not happy! You didn’t invite me to your party! I will turn your guests to stone and you will come back with me to work at my castle. I like capturing Princesses!” He wiggles his magic fingers and turns all the party guests to stone! So the dog. turns to stone, and the cat, and the mouse plus all the guests while they are still dancing!

At that moment there is a fluttering of wings as the Princess’ Fairy Godmother comes flying in through the window. She says “The Princess may have 5 chances to escape (it’s 7 in the book, but this can make the story rather long!!), to change her colour and change her shape” Then the Fairy godmother gets out her magic wand and zaps the magic to the Princess.

The wizard just laughs his horrible laugh – “mwah, mwah, mwah, mwhaaaaH.” holding our bellies. He then wiggles his magic fingers and turns the Fairy Godmother to stone. She’s stuck still pointing her magic wand.

The wizard climbs up the chimney with the Princess, reaching up and marching as you climb. He whisks her off to his tall dark castle.

Over the castle draw-bridge, the Wizard opens the big creaky door, and closes it behind him (door other side). Once inside he gets out his big book of magic. Sitting up, knees bent, place the soles of your feet together as you draw your knees out and down, opening your book. The wizard says, ‘this is your first chance to escape. I will count to 100 and then I shall come and find you using my book of magic”

The princess runs outside! She has wobbly jelly legs, so she runs like a dog (hands in downward dog, running legs)! Once outside she sees a moat. On the moat is a boat. She gets in and begins to row. Oh no, she rowed in a circle, so needs to row with the other oar too. She hops out of the boat, standing with legs wide and looks through her binoculars, twisting one way, then the other to see what she can turn into…She sees a blue fish! Using the magic her Fairy Godmother had given her, she sprinkles herself and turns into the blue fish. She hides, hoping the wizard won’t find her, tucking up into a little ball.

Meanwhile back at the castle the wizard finishes counting to a hundred. Sitting up knees bent, feet flat. “Ninety nine, one hundred!” He opens his big book of magic, and exclaims “Ah, hah!” as he sees the Princess! He uses his magic fingers, spreading them wide, then closing them in, to return the Princess back to her normal self and bring her back to the castle. The wizard laughs again! “mwah, mwah, mwah, mwhaaaaH.”

“As a punishment Princess Eliza you will come to my smelly sock room to wash and dry every last one of them!”

Yucky! The Princess thinks, but gets to work washing. Seated, cross-legged, hands behind the head and twist side to side from your waist as you say wishy washy woo, wishy washy woo. Then tumble dry the socks, pointing your first fingers in front of your mouthtumble dryer breathing mudra and blowing a long slow breath while spinning your fingers round each other.

“Now Princess, is your second chance of escape. I’m starting my next count of a hundred!”

The Princess runs again. With her wobbly jelly legs and her dog running. She gets onto a bicycle and starts to cycle. She jumps off then stands, with legs wide twisting one way to look through her binoculars, then the other way. She sees a green grasshopper! She sprinkles herself with the Fairy Godmother magic and turns into the green grasshopper. Then she hides again, tucking into a little ball.

“As a punishment Princess Eliza you will wash all the slimy toothpaste from the walls of my green bathroom!”

Yucky! The Princess thinks, but gets to work scrubbing. Standing tall, legs wide, scrub high to the sky then down to the floor, and side to side. She scrubs and scrubs until that bathroom is sparkling!

“Now Princess, is your third chance of escape. I’m starting my next count of a hundred!”

The Princess runs again. With her wobbly jelly legs and her dog running. She gets into a helicopter. She starts to spin, feet grounded mat width apart, arms out and twisting from the waist as the helicopter lifts up into the air. She comes to land and standing with legs wide still, twists one way to look through her binoculars then the other way. She sees a purple butterfly . She sprinkles herself with the Fairy Godmother magic and turns into the purple butterfly.

Then she hides again, tucking into a little ball.

“As a punishment Princess Eliza you will cut all ten of my cheesy toenails!”

Yucky! The Princess thinks, but gets to work. On your back, lift up your legs and scissor snip your legs wide then together ten times.

“Now Princess, is your fourth chance of escape. I’m starting my next count of a hundred!”

The Princess runs again. With her wobbly jelly legs and her dog running. She gets into a hot air balloon. She starts to blow it up and when it’s full it sways side to side as she says “tick, tock, like a clock, until I find my centre”. She lands and standing with legs wide still, twists one way to look through her binoculars then the other way. She sees a black cat. She sprinkles herself with the Fairy Godmother magic and turns into the black cat.

Then she hides again, tucking into a little ball.

“As a punishment Princess Eliza you will make me some disgusting soup for lunch!”

Yucky! The Princess thinks, but gets to work. Sit up tall, legs wide, take hold of one ankle and stir the soup, plopping in any disgusting ingredients you can think of. Then swap stirring with the other ankle, adding some more nasty bits and pieces. The wizard leans forward and drinks a big bowl of the disgusting soup and it drips all down his long beard! Urrrrgggghhh!

“Now Princess, is your fifth and final chance of escape. I’m starting my next count of a hundred!”

The Princess runs again. With her wobbly jelly legs and her dog running. She gets into an aeroplane. She lands and standing with legs wide, twists one way to look through her binoculars then the other way. She has an idea!!!

“I need to turn myself into something really scary! Then I can put an end to all this and escape once and for all” She then spots a big red, fire breathing dragon. Just what’s needed!! She sprinkles herself with the Fairy Godmother magic and turns into the big red, fire breathing dragon.

Then she tiptoes into the wizards castle as he’s still counting and hides behind him. The wizard finishes counting to a hundred. Sitting up knees bent, feet flat. “Ninety nine, one hundred!” He opens his big book of magic. The Princess jumps up and does a big dragon fire ROOOOAAARRR!! Causing the book to set on fire and the wizard to jump and run away. All the spells are broken so the people at Princess Eliza’s party are no longer stone. The dog can wag his tail, the cat can slink around meowing, the mouse can squeak and eat the cheese on sticks and the guests can all dance again, playing their musical bumps. (Play one last round, landing with a Namaste). The Fairy Godmother is no longer frozen either and releases from her magic wand position.
Time for Princess Eliza to blow out her birthday candles… finally. Lying on your back, legs up and flicker your toes like your birthday candles. Blow all of them out and come to sit up.

The Princess makes a wish. “May the wizard be happy and find peace.” Then maybe he won’t be so grumpy all the time. We close our eyes, make our own wishes, breath in happy thoughts and sigh out feeling peaceful.

Relaxation

Make a pamper train (sit in wide leg position with hands on the shoulders of the person in front of them) Everyone rubs their hands together fast to increase the heat and the magic powers they have, then place them on the back of their friend in front. This gets everyone feeling calm and cared for. Ask them to make little raindrops with their fingertips on their friend’s shoulders and back. Then make rainbow shapes, using their whole hand drawing a rainbow arc over their friends back.
